Child support referral is one part of a broader system of family stability. YCAN works through community partners to ensure custodial parents are informed about available child support services and connected to the appropriate offices when it fits their situation.
This is not a separate program and it is not legal advice. It is a practical referral resource to support intake, case management, and informed conversations.
Why this information is provided.
As part of the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG), YCAN and its partners are required to inform custodial parents about available child support services and offer a referral to the appropriate local office upon request.
This requirement comes from federal CSBG law and is implemented through Wyoming’s CSBG program to ensure individuals are aware of resources that may support long-term family stability.
For partners, this means incorporating a simple process into intake or case management: inform, offer, and document when appropriate.
When child support may be part of the plan.
Child support is not required for services. However, it can be one part of a longer-term stability plan depending on the household’s situation.
- A custodial parent needs more consistent income
- A household is stabilizing after separation, recovery, or job loss
- Support is needed beyond one-time assistance
- A client asks about paternity or child support options
Your role is not to provide legal advice or direct decisions. Your role is to ensure individuals understand their options and can access the appropriate office if they choose.
A simple approach partners can use.
Ask
Is the client a custodial parent, and would child support information be helpful?
Inform
Explain that child support services may include locating a parent, establishing paternity, or setting a support order.
Refer & Document
Provide office information if requested and document that the referral was offered or provided.
