Housing Pathways
Housing is complicated. Finding the right place to start shouldn't be.
YCAN doesn't own Wyoming's housing system, and we don't provide every housing service. We connect the dots. Start with what's happening, and this page points you to the systems and next steps that may apply.

Housing isn't one resource. It's a maze of different systems.
Someone who says "I need housing help" might actually need:
- A safe place to sleep tonight
- Help with past-due rent
- A rent adjustment because income dropped
- A housing voucher
- An income-restricted apartment
- Help with a deposit
- Help keeping the heat on
- Legal help with an eviction notice
- Housing that supports recovery
- Senior or accessible housing
- Help buying or repairing a home
- Just a place to start
Those aren't interchangeable. A directory can't tell you which one you need. So this page doesn't ask which agency you want. It asks what's happening.
What's happening with your housing?
Choose your county, then open the situation closest to yours.

Before you ask for rent help: if you live in income-based housing and your income dropped, see pathway 03 first. Your rent may be lowered.

03My income dropped, and my rent is based on my incomeSection 8, USDA Rural Development, or other income-based housing
Start here: Ask your housing manager for an interim recertification before you apply for outside help. Your rent is already tied to your income, so it may go down.
- Contact your property manager or housing authority right away. Report the income change and ask for an interim recertification or a change-in-income form.
- Put it in writing. A short note with your name, unit number, what changed (job loss, fewer hours, medical bills), and the date it changed.
- Gather proof. A termination letter, last pay stub, unemployment claim, or medical bills.
- Turn it in and keep proof. Keep a copy, a dated receipt, or a confirmation email.
- Follow up in 1 to 2 weeks if you don’t hear back, and ask for the rent change in writing.
- Still short after that? Then contact your county’s local organization about the remaining gap.
Why this comes first: it keeps you from overpaying rent, and it lets limited community funds reach households that are still short after their rent is adjusted.

Start here: Deposit help is hard to find. YCAN’s FY2027 CSBG funds don’t cover deposits. Call 2-1-1 and your county’s local organization to ask what exists right now, and ask the landlord whether the deposit can be paid in parts.

Paying your rent, but it takes too much of your budget? That's real, even when you aren't behind. A HUD-approved counselor at Wyoming Housing Network can help you plan: (307) 472-5843.
This check doesn't decide eligibility for any program. It only helps you find a place to start.
Where YCAN funds fit.
YCAN's CSBG funding is small, and it's aimed at a few places in each county where limited dollars can protect something much larger. FY2027 services begin Monday, October 5, 2026, and help is available only while each county's funds last.
YCAN doesn't take walk-ins or self-referrals. Approved help is paid directly to the landlord or utility, never as cash.
Where did the path break?
If a number is wrong, an apartment is gone, or you followed a pathway and still got stuck, tell us. We fix the page, and we look for the pattern.
When people keep getting stuck in the same place, that isn't a website problem. It's a housing-system condition, and it goes to our partners, our needs assessment, and our board.

We connect the dots.
YCAN works alongside communities to change the conditions that create poverty, strengthen local systems, and expand opportunities for future generations.
- We don't own the housing system.
- We help people see how the pieces fit.
