Overcoming Substance Abuse Addiction in Park County, Wyoming
In 2017, we developed our Park County Recovery Care Coordination Program in partnership with Park County Court Supervised Treatment Program. The program was created due to the lack of services for substance abusers in recovery programs. The lack of support was found in our 2016 community needs assessment for Park County, Wyoming. Park County, Wyoming, has numerous substance abuse treatment programs and substance abuse counselors, but the needs assessment found a lack of financial support for essential services to rebuild their lives.
Upon reentry, many individuals working to overcome addiction were homeless or couch surfing, leading to relapse and the cycle of addiction. In addition, these individuals faced enormous barriers to finding employment due to lack of transportation, access to work clothing, hygiene supplies, and telephone or internet access for job searches. As a result, they needed essential services to survive and ongoing services to achieve their sobriety and self-sufficiency goals.
Yellowstone County Assistance Network partnered with Park Country Court Supervised Treatment Program, the adult “Drug Court” program serving the people of Park County, Wyoming. Their program is designed to accept non-violent offenders with one or more substance abuse problems, including alcohol. Participants will be admitted post-guilty plea from Municipal, Circuit, Juvenile, and District courts and must be pre-approved under the program’s guidelines. In addition, participants are required to waive numerous constitutional rights to allow the Drug Court Judge to impose immediate consequences for violations of the Drug Court’s treatment program rules.
The Drug Court itself will be based in Cody. Still, participants may reside anywhere in Park County, and limited transportation to and from treatment and court sessions will be available in certain circumstances. The program combines treatment with immediate consequences for violations and instills life skills that many defendants lack. Participants are required to attend numerous counseling sessions and become productive members of the community by maintaining full-time employment or enrolling in school full time, being current on all financial obligations, and remaining clean and sober. The program lasts a minimum of one year and is a demanding substance abuse treatment regimen that takes a whole-life approach to treatment.
Yellowstone Country Assistance Network coordinates essential financial assistance services with Park Country Court Supervised Treatment Program Case Manager to provide continuity in care and ongoing essential services for a minimum of a year to up to 25 participants. This partnership ensures participants can meet basic needs while seeking employment, successfully stopping drug and alcohol abuse, and graduating from the program with economic independence!
